In February we completed a fibre optic installation at a school in Crowthorne, Berkshire. The project consisted of 4 singlemode fibre optic cables wired to new and existing comms cabinets. The cables have mostly been installed externally following existing cable routes. These cables will support the fastest fibre optic transmission speeds commercially available today, which is up to 100 Gigabits per second at time of writing, although at present they will be used for 1Gb/s. Singlemode cables are far cheaper than multimode cables but offer greater performance, the cost of the SFP’s ( the interfaces in the Network hardware) are generally not a great deal of difference to the Multimode versions where available.
As well as the Fibre optic cabling, we mounted up a number of new wall mounted comms cabinets and replaced an existing rack which was too small to support the new managed Unifi switches which were to be installed.
