Category 5 & 5e Cabling
All You Need to Know:

Category 5e was borne out of Category 5 cabling, when the advent of Gigabit ethernet transmission called for the use of all 4 pairs of the cabling. Previously, only 2 pairs were used for 100Mbps fast ethernet. In order to use Category 5 cabling as Category 5e, all that was really required was to retest the cabling to the new standards. As Category 5e systems evolved, manufacturers improved their products and hard room margins which eventually evolved into the Category 6 cabling system.

Cat 5 & Cat 5e Cabling systems have formed the bedrock of most modern cabling installations and IT infrastructures, and are still the most adopted choice of many large & small businesses.

We foresee that continuing for some time, although the tendency now is to opt for a Category 6 or beyond based system for enterprises, or for those who require future-proofed installations supporting speeds of 10 Gigabit and beyond.

Cables are generally terminated into patch panels in the comms toom or A ends. Patch Panels present the cables in an easy to use way that prevents damage to them and allows easy identification. Copper patch panels have an RJ45 interface on them.

Category 5e is capable of supporting speeds up to 1 Gigabit Ethernet and for some HDMI distribution systems - its uses are endless for transporting media and network signals around in almost all industries and environments.

In simplistic terms bandwidth in Network communications refers to the speed of the equipment, cabling & protocols operating over the combined systems. Higher bandwidth means more speed.
