Structured Data Cabling
All You Need to Know:
Structured cabling design and installation is governed by National, European and International standards - calling a cabling system structured is saying the cabling can support different protocols and services across it and that the topology is designed in a hierarchical star allowing flexibility, performance and easy expansion where so required.
The structured cabling system can be broken down into the following elements:
Inter-building internal or external inter-linking cabling between wiring centres or comms rooms - generally high-speed high-bandwidth fibre optics, supporting 10 gigabits per second and beyond.
Connections and cables which use light to transmit and receive signals. Immune to electrical interference, cables can support unlimited speeds over long distances. Commonly used between buildings, this requires specialist engineers tools and equipment to install & maintain.
Used to describe spaces to house Telecoms & Network Hardware and equipment, also called Comms rooms.
Commonly uses copper wiring, providing Local area network (LAN) connections to devices including desktops, CCTV, Wireless systems. Categories 5e, 6 or 6A cables and fibre optic can be used to provide connections.
Generally long-length high-speed connections, most commonly single mode fibre optic cabling wired between Telecoms rooms.
The distribution of switch or equipment ports between cabinets, or from a chassis to patch panels in separate cabinets. Can be copper or optical fibre - can be in a Telecoms room or Data centre environment.
Usually near the centre of the hierarchy, high-speed links and critical design decisions need to be made here.
The cable containment and support systems, includes basket or cable trays, cable trunking, dado & skirting trunking. Externally cable ducts and chambers.
Cables are terminated onto or into these within Racks or Cabinets. Patch leads are used in patch panels to make the final equipment or onward connections.
Also known as jacks or outlets, in copper cabling systems these are the receptacles you plug into around the walls and floors.
